Abstrakt

Innovative pedagogic approaches for language learning are being discovered through the application of
virtual worlds. The “AVALON Learning Project” is one of the leading international projects that use
virtual worlds to explore and implement new teaching and learning opportunities. Active learning
theories such as Activity Theory explain the importance of building community for adoption and success
of a learning system. This article describes the building and integration of learning elements in such a
learning system. While this case is within the domain of language learning the implications for learners
in other domains is clearly evident, that is information communication technologies (ICT) are applied
most successfully when community interactions are utilized.
